EMILY BURNS

Occupational Therapist

BIOGRAPHY

Emily grew up on a farm just outside of Geraldton, north of Perth, Western Australia. She completed her degree at Curtin University, graduating in 2015.

Emily has worked at Calm and Connected since she graduated at the end of 2015. She enjoys working with families, children and teachers to support them in reaching their occupation-based goals at home, school and in the community. In 2016 Emily completed a 7 week internship at the private practice Early Links. Under the mentorship of Jacky Peile she worked alongside therapists using functional neurology approaches. This began Emily’s passion of integrating neuroscience principles into occupational therapy practice to allow for targeted outcomes.

Emily has been a team leader at the Calm and Connected camps since their inception in Perth. She currently attends 4 camps a year through Calm and Connected, and Camp Jabiru in Sydney every year. Emily attended Camp Jabiru (Sensory Gym, Sydney) as a practicum in 2017. Through this practicum program she received mentorship and training from Tracy Stackhouse, Colleen Hacker, Lynette Burke and Beth Osten. Emily strongly believes in the camp experience to provide a fun and supportive environment for children to develop skills including self-care, social skills, confidence building and self-regulation.

Emily strongly believes in the importance and value of working closely with families and takes a holistic approach to identify strategies and interventions to best support them at that time.

APPROACH

Emily takes a self-regulation approach to understanding the difficulties that children are having, the impact that this has and therefore which strategies are going to be the most beneficial. Providing an explanation to children, parents and teachers can go a long way to helping them understand the behaviours, and also supports them to choose the solutions that are going to suit their situation. Emily is flexible in working across different environments and is able to complete therapy sessions in the context its needed. This often means a varied day as a morning session may be at the park, then a school or even a shopping centre.

Frequently used programs and strategies include:

  • Dr Stuart Shanker’s framework of Self-Regulation
  • ‘How Does Your Engine Run’ program for self-regulation
  • ‘Zones of Regulation’ program for self-regulation
  • Sensory diets and programs
  • Social and emotional programs from BEST Programs 4 Kids
  • SOS Feeding Approach
