This group program helps kids develop the following skills using the motivating medium of LEGO:
- To help communicate with others (using both verbal and nonverbal communication)
- To assist in expressing their feelings to others
- To learn how to adapt their behaviour in social situations
- Develop problem-solving skills
- Build on social skills such as turn-taking, eye contact, and joint attention
- Fine motor skills
About Construction group:
In Construction group children take on specific lego “roles”, and work collaboratively as a team to build lego models. Construction group encourages children to be self-reflective and to give constructive comments and feedback to peers, along with working on their communication, behaviour, problem solving, social and fine motor skills.
Children are split into groups of 3-4, with a therapist, or therapy assistant assigned to each group. There will be a therapist who will be a “floater”, who is there to provide extra support for the children who need it.
Each child is given the opportunity to rotate through the construction roles:
- Engineer: the person who describes the pieces and reads the instructions
- Supplier: the person who has to find the correct piece in the pile and provide to the builder
- Builder: the person who listens to the engineers instructions and builds the lego model.
Once given their roles, the children work together to build their lego model. At the end of the group there is “free play” time, where they can express their creative talents with the lego! Together, we all pack away the lego before its home time.
Regular movement breaks such as ‘crash bang smash activities’ will be incorporated into the session so that children can maintain their attention and focus on the lego building. We will break halfway through the session for some morning/afternoon tea.
